A photo of a sand dollar, washed up on our beach, out front of Sully's and the inspiration for the beach house logo. When we first bought the house, we spotted at least one sand dollar every time we walked the beach out the front of the house. 

Marcia Barker is a local artist who lives in Mission Beach. Her paintings are mostly beach scenes depicting the golden sands, the beautiful blue ocean and the swaying coconut palms. She has exhibited in a variety of exhibitions at the Mission Arts Gallery and also won a prize in the 2022 Annual Awards.

“I’m pleased to hear that you love my painting. It was such a pleasure to paint this one as we walked the Kennedy Track at South Mission Beach many times and always stopped there to admire the view at Lovers Beach. I just had to paint it!”

Like Marcia, we also love the Kennedy Track, and it’s so close to Sully’s. This view is less than a two kilometre walk from the house (head south along the beach) but it is worth doing more of the track which follows the headland all the way to Hull River.

David Stacey is an acclaimed North Queensland artist who moved to the region in the 1980s and spent two years on Dunk Island and South Mission Beach in the early 1990s. He is renowned for his captivating landscapes and detailed bird paintings. Stacey’s art has been featured in many scientific publications and he has exhibited in Australia and Japan. He operated a successful gallery in Kuranda for many years. This print was purchased in the mid 1990s and shows a male olive-backed sunbird (or more commonly known as the garden sunbird). The male bird has the metallic blue breast. The sunbird has a distinctive chirp, which you may hear in the trees at Sully's.

We’ve always loved sunbirds, and they have lived in our gardens, and under the eaves, of various homes we have lived in. We love hearing and seeing the sunbirds in the garden at Sully’s.

The artist signature is L Bryon but the artist details and history of this original painting are unkown.

We love the flowers and the colours match the blue tones of the master bedroom. We were lucky enough to rescue this beautiful piece from the local Mission Beach opp shop!

Holly McLennan-Brown is a proud Yorta Yorta woman and a contemporary Aboriginal artist whose style combines culture with contemporary design. This piece pulls inspiration from her great grandmother, Mary Rebecca James, and explores the importance of family, community and one’s determination.

These pieces and another series by Holly were featured in K Mart's interior decor product range, which went viral on social media due to the low price and beautiful nature of the artwork. Whilst not local art, we love the colours and asthetic balance of these pieces.

Cairns based potter, M J Ryan, has explored his creativity and developed his skills over the last decade. He focuses primarily on functional pieces. He sees the beauty in how ceramics have existed across centuries to reveal a quiet beauty through their pure usefulness — objects shaped not for ornament but for purpose, yet becoming aesthetically compelling precisely because of that functional honesty.  Ryan exhibits his pottery occasionally at local markets, and can be identified by his crazy choice of shirt and bushy eyebrows.

We love these pieces for their combined beauty and functionality.

This pair of bedside tables have been up cycled by Nicole, a furniture restorer based in Cairns. The body has been painted in a neutral beige with the natural timber top and legs treated with a light paint wash in the same colour. New matt black handles have been added to the drawers. 

Nicole has a workshop full of potential upcycle projects and is always looking for her next piece.

We loved the colours of these bedsides which fit beautifully into the theme of Sully's.
